World Oceans Day Beach Cleanup - June 8, 2013 - Ocean Beach, San Francisco

It's our 7th Annual World Oceans Beach Cleanup at San Francisco's Ocean Beach on Saturday, June 8, 2013. Rain cancels, but call 415-342-7497 to confirm on the day of the event.

We'll meet at 10AM at Stairwell 17 on Ocean Beach (north end of OB across from Golden Gate Park). The event goes until 12PM.

This event has been co-hosted with the San Francisco Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation since 2007. We're excited to promote this event again for 2013!

All the supplies that you might need will be provided, but you bring your own:
  • reusable gloves
  • reusable bucket or bag
Don't forget to bring:
  • layered clothing - it could be warm and sunny or cooler so bring options
  • hat, nontoxic sunblock, sunglasses, or anything else you need to protect you from the midday sun.
  • water in a reusable container

Parking is available right by the event, but carpooling, bicycling, and public transportation are encouraged for volunteers. If you need help planning public transportation, please visit: http://tripplanner.transit.511.org

Happy Earth Day 2013!

Have a wonderful Earth Day 2013!

How can you help our oceans?

  1. Give up unsustainable seafood.
    • If you don't know where it comes from and how it was caught, then don't eat it. Simple, right?
    • Shrimp, for example, often are fished in unsustainable ways that drown or harm sea turtles.
    • That tuna sushi that you love might have come from a fishing boat using longline fishing, which kills lots of wildlife. And if you're eating bluefin tuna, you might be eating an endangered species!
  2. Give up single-use plastic.
    • Bring your own reusable bag when shopping and say no to plastic bags.
    • Bring your own water bottle instead of buying bottled water.
    • Skip the straw or bring your own instead of using plastic straws.
  3. Drive less.
    • Really? Yes, the less you drive or do other things that generate carbon pollution, the more that you help reduce the problem of climate change, which is a serious threat to our oceans and its wildlife.
    • As an alternative, relax on public transportation, walk, or enjoy a fun bike ride to your destination.
  4. Enjoy wildlife from a distance.
    • You wouldn't be disturbed in your home, would you?
Don't forget that World Oceans Day is coming on June 8!

Please vote for the oceans by tomorrow!

Every election is an important one for the oceans. The threats to our oceans only grow if we don't take action. One action that you can take for the oceans is to go out and vote for the candidate that you think will best protect our oceans and other resources.

On behalf of the oceans -- thanks for voting and participating in our democracy!

Valentine's Day = Love the Ocean: Use Less Plastic!

Sign up for our annual event on Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/events/120663968056408/

Show your love for that special someone in your life and the ocean on this Valentine's Day.

Since we just had Chinese New Year, why not make a resolution to use less plastic?

Love the Ocean, Use Less Plastic:

1. Bring your reusable bag when you go shopping and/or say "no" when offered a plastic bag.

2. Pick a non-plastic gift to show your love. Really, is plastic the way to say, "I love you"?

3. How about wrapping your gift in a reusable shopping bag?

4. If you live near the ocean, take the time to visit and have a romantic walk on the beach, go surfing, go wildlife watching, or just to watch the sun set. Maybe even take a couple of minutes to pick up some marine debris while you're there or to even join a beach cleanup that weekend (check your local Surfrider for info: www.surfrider.org).

5. If you go out to dinner, remember to order only sustainable seafood (if you order it at all) and bring your own container for leftovers.

6. Consider donating on behalf of your love to the ocean charity of your choice.

7. Share this event with your friends all over the world to spread the word. Last year we had over 1,200 people reply "Yes" to show their support. Can we get more this year?

The ocean thanks you and loves you back.

San Francisco Ocean Beach Master Plan Comments and Update on Plastic Bag Ban

The Draft San Francisco Ocean Beach Master Plan has been extended until today (Wed., 11/23) at 5pm. Please review the plan and submit your comments at http://www.spur.org/ocean-beach. We can only make the beach better if we participate in the process.

Update on the San Francisco plastic bag ban expansion: Yesterday, the Board of Supervisors voted to add amendments to the proposal and the new date for the vote is December 6, 2011. Please be sure to contact the Board of Supervisors whether you're a resident or visitor in support of the plastic bag ban and new fees for reusable bags when you don't bring your own bag.

Email the Board of Supervisors: Board.of.Supervisors@sfgov.org

Contact Mayor Lee and ask him to pass this law: http://sfmayor.org/index.aspx?page=7

Please support San Francisco's Plastic Bag Ban and Fee Proposal

Supervisor Ross Mirkarimi introduced a proposal to expand San Francisco's ban on single-use plastic bags in San Francisco. We need your support to counter the "Plastic Bag Bullies" who want to prevent cities and states from improving environmental quality and protecting ocean health.

The proposal would "extend the restrictions on checkout bags from supermarkets and chain pharmacies to all retail establishments and food establishments in the City and County of San Francisco." The new ban would "require stores to add a checkout bag charge of 10 cents, rising to 25 cents, if they provide a customer with a checkout bag" and those fees would start July 1, 2012.

Contact Mayor Lee's office and ask him to support the bag ban and fee proposal for San Francisco! http://sfmayor.org/index.aspx?page=7 Mayor Lee has stated that he is undecided so he needs to hear from San Francisco residents and visitors that we want this bag ban to grow.

The San Francisco Board of Supervisors will vote tomorrow. Please contact them with your support. Email them your comments: Board.of.Supervisors@sfgov.org

If you're available, please come to testify in support of the proposed ban and fees for bags. The board will vote after 2PM tomorrow (Tuesday, 11/22) in the main chambers at City Hall.

San Francisco needs this bag ban! Other countries and cities have dramatically reduced single-use plastic and it's time for San Francisco to catch up. Our oceans deserve to be healthier and anything we can do to reduce plastic marine debris will help.

Get involved with the oceans this week! Coastal Cleanup Day and Obama Ocean Task Force

In June, President Obama declared that June be National Oceans Month and his administration laid out a plan for moving forward to protect our ocean resources. This was great news amidst all our World Oceans Day activities in June. Now September has rolled around and this month offers some great opportunities to get involved in shaping the future of our oceans.

On September 17, 2009, from 2:30pm until 6pm, the Ocean Policy Task Force Public Meeting will take place in San Franisco at the Hyatt Regency San Francisco at Embarcadero Center, Ballroom A, 5 Embarcadero Center, San Francisco, CA 94111 (near BART and MUNI Embarcadero Station). This is the second public meeting to accept public input on the issues set out in President Obama's Memorandum. You have an unprecedented opportunity to play a roll in setting the priorities for this administration and our marine resources.

On September 16, please join ocean advocates at Baobab Village in San Francisco from 5:30pm until 9pm. Find out more details from the invite: http://www.oceanchampions.org/pdfs/OceanPartyInvite9_16_09FINAL.pdf
